What is a DOI?

Answer

DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a standardized unique number which is used to identify an article or document. DOI number can be assigned to any digital object, for example:

  • academic journal articles
  • research reports
  • books
  • conference proceedings
  • media

The DOI creation process is governed and managed by the International DOI Foundation, which provides services and registration of DOI numbers.

DOIs usually start with the number 10 followed by a period. This is an example:

10.1159/000330840
