What are acronyms? Where can I go to verify its meaning?
Answer
An acronym is a word (such as NATO) formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term.
Each discipline compiles their own acronyms. Example, NATO means North Atlantic Treaty Organization, you can find other examples in the following library collections:
- "A Guide to Federal Terms and Acronyms" - https://ebookcentral-proquest-com.ezproxy.nu.edu.kz/lib/astana/detail.action?docID=662303
- "Dictionary of Aeronautical Terms : Over 11,000 Entries" - https://ezproxy.nu.edu.kz:2077/lib/astana/detail.action?docID=5631282
It is good to check the authoritative list of acronyms as some of them may be spelled and pronounced the same but the meaning is different.
